Recent and Current Reads

  • Friend or Fiend? with the Pain and the Great One (Pain & the Great One): Judy Blume
We just finished this book as a read aloud. We have loved all the recent Pain and Great One chapter books by Judy Blume, and this one was also spetacular. She just has a way of getting inside the minds of kids. Noah especially LOVES listening to Pain and Great One stories.
  • Along for the Ride: Sarah Dessen
The newly released novel by YA writer Sarah Dessen is a delightful page turner. I've been waiting for this book, and sent my husband to the store buy my copy. After the kidlets were in bed, I promptly devoured it, all at once. 40 pages from the end, my husband tried to steal the book, run downstairs and hide it, but I threw such a fit he gave in and let me read to the end.
  • Ararat : Louise Gluck
My sister-in-law loaned me this poetry book and told me I would like it. She's right! I am really enjoying this poet that I hadn't come across before. Poetry fans, check it out!
  • Fiona's Luck: Teresa Bateman, Kelly Murphy
A really neat Irish Tale, this is full of trickery, wits, and adventure.
  • The Human Body: Seymour Simon
We've read a few human body books, but this one is really neat because it has some super cool microscope photographs. The information was at times a bit heavy laden for us at this stage, but there were lots of really neat things to look at and talk about.
  • Natalie & Naughtily: Vincent X. Kirsch
Fans of Fancy Nancy, Fanny, and other such books will probably like this one! The story is fun, and the illustrations are whimsical and detailed. Both Sarah and Noah loved it.
  • The Queen of Style: Caralyn Buehner, Mark Buehner
This is a fun, crazy tale for fans of queens, princesses, and castles.
  • I'd Really Like to Eat a Child: Sylviane Donnio, Dorothee De Monfreid: Books
    This is hilarious!
  • If I Stay: Gayle Forman
I tried very hard to really like this book, but it just didn't quite click for me. The main character was just not a person I could really relate to. Parts of the book were incredibly cheesy to me. All the way through the book I couldn't help thinking that the author really wasn't a musician, because things in the book regarding music just didn't really work. It turns out that she wasn't a musician. Go figure.
  • emma jean lazarus fell in love
Terrific! This is a sequel to "Emma Jean Lazarus Fell out of a Tree." The author captures middle school so perfectly. I think this book would be a terrific hit with students in grades 5, 6, and 7 especially. The characters are wonderful.
